US Open: No final repeat this year!

Posted in Daily Reports with tags , , , on September 11, 2010 by Ondrej

No final repeat this year! Vera Zvonareva reaches her second Grand Slam final in a row this year after beating the top seed Caroline Wozniacki 64 63. The Dane made too many unforced errors today while the Russian was way more consistent and smarter today. Sweet revenge for Zvonareva at the US Open, Wozniacki beat her in Montreal final two weeks ago. The conditions were way better on Friday, the wind still bothered players though. It didn’t really affect this match anyway and Zvonareva deserved to win this match. Her opponent will be Kim Clijsters, the defending champion, who beat last home hope 46 76(2) 64 in a huge battle. Williams was in a control until that tie-break in the second set which she played really badly and that affected the final set for sure. Clijsters was break up in the final set, but Williams managed to break back just to lose next two games and the match. Clijsters converted her first match point with a beautiful backhand down the line winner.

The final will be played as a night session match on Saturday, starting at 7:00 pm New York time. Will Zvonareva be more successful than at Wimbledon? Or will “Saint Kim” defend her title? I’m going with Clijsters in this one.

US Open: And here are the semifinalists!

Posted in Daily Reports with tags , , , , , , , on September 9, 2010 by Ondrej

At first, I’m sorry for no reports recently but I had a really busy week (holidays, my birthday and so on) so I hope you don’t mind.

Meanwhile, the US Open is almost at its end! All four US Open 2010 semifinalists are known! I predicted three semifinalists correctly. First one is Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, the top seed. The Dane beat Slovak surprising quarterfinalist, Dominika Cibulkova, 62 75 in the night session quarterfinals match, in tough windy conditions, yesterday. Wozniacki played smarter than her inexperienced opponent. Cibulkova was hitting hard and was trying to hit a lot of winners but that’s simply impossible in such wind which bothered players all day yesterday. Wozniacki played way less aggressive than her opponent and hit winners only occassionaly when she had to, which was a right tactic from her. In the end, Cibulkova didn’t have much more winners anyway. The last year’s finalist, Wozniacki, will face Russian Vera Zvonareva in the semifinals. Zvonareva beat Estonian Kaia Kanepi, this year’s Wimbledon quarterfinalist, 63 75 in the day session match yesterday. Also Zvonareva and Kanepi had problems with the wind, Kanepi made total of 60 unforced errors which is really a lot for a straight sets match. Zvonareva simply made less unforced errors which resulted in her victory.

On Tuesday, Venus Williams, the only American player remaining in the main draw and the only home hope, faced Francesca Schiavone of Italy, this year’s Roland Garros champion. This match was pretty much up and down but the home veteran managed to win the match 76(5) 64 and will play the defending champion, Kim Clijsters of Belgium, who beat this year’s Roland Garros finalist Samantha Stosur of Australia 64 57 63.

US Open: Seeds in troubles on Tuesday!

Draw

On the contrary, the second day of the last Grand Slam of the season, the US Open, offered a few upsets and more interesting matches than the first one. Another sixteen seeded players were in action. Let’s look at how they progressed.

First on Arthur Ashe Stadium was #4 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia who is currently struggling to get into a form she had when she was world number one. Her opponent was Romanian Simona Halep, a talented and upcoming youngster. The Serbian started very well with two early breaks and had no problems to win the first set 64, but her unforced errors counter was pretty high. The second set was dictated by Halep. Jankovic made even more unforced errors in the second set so the Romanian battled back to tie the set count to 1-1. The final set was very dramatic. Halep was the better player most of the set but failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the final set. Jankovic showed her experience and turned around the score to 75 in her favour, so she advanced to the second round.

Russian Maria Sharapova, one of the contenders for the title, had a very tough first round draw. She had to play Jarmila Groth of Australia who shined at Wimbledon this year and almost beat Venus Williams there. Groth fulfilled predictions and gave former world number one a tough match. The Australian won the first set 64. But since that, Sharapova was on fire and dictated the play, she won a battle for the second set, 63, and final set was even easier for her. Sharapova won 46 63 61.

Last match on Arthur Ash Stadium featured the top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark. The Dane faced home wildcard Chelsey Gullickson. No troubles for the top seed who continues in a great form and winning streak. Wozniacki won 61 61. Russian Vera Zvonareva, this year’s surprising Wimbledon finalist, had no problems against Slovak qualifier Zuzana Kucova in the first round and cruised into the second round after a 62 61 win.

No doubts that the biggest upset of all first round matches is a loss of Na Li of China, seed number 8. The Chinese started very well, won the first set easily 62. But her inconsistency and great play by her opponent, Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, resulted in a 62 46 26 loss in the first round. Both players are last year’s quarterfinalists. Younger of Bondarenkos sisters managed it better mentally. Another upset happenned later, also on Louis Armstrong Stadium, where German Andrea Petkovic beat Nadia Petrova 62 46 76(4) in a huge battle. It’s definitely not that big upset as the loss of Na Li, but still Petkovic wasn’t in any big form, while Petrova reached the final in New Haven last week. Another seed who failed was Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic who lost to a qualifier Tamira Paszek of Austria 26 75 62 after being break up in the second set.

US Open: Favourites cruise on DAY 1!

Draw

US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, started on Monday with bottom half of the first round matches. We can call it a “boring day”? Because no seeds are out and we didn’t have any big upset yesterday. The only upset, for me, can be considered a loss of Polona Hercog against qualifier Mandy Minella.

Some seeds were in trouble anyway, but all are through on DAY 1. Kim Clijsters, the defending champion and #2 seed this year, played Greta Arn of Hungary. Clijsters had no troubles at the beginning and won the first set 60 in 18 minutes. But  former world number one started making a lot of unforced errors in the second set. Arn was even up 4-0 but you mustn’t underestimate the Belgian because she can come back against almost anyone when she’s on. And this exactly happened yesterday. Even though Arn was up 4-0 and was serving for the second set at 5-4, Clijsters outplayed her opponent and finally took the match 60 75.

Next seed in big troubles was Samantha Stosur. As number fifth seed, Stosur lost the first set 36 to getting back to form Russian Elena Vesnina. The second set needed to be decided in a tie-break so Stosur was only one game away from a first round exit. But Vesnina didn’t really managed it mentally and lost the tie-break 2-7. Stosur was solid in the final set while Vesnina was spraying errors off both sides which resulted in a 36 76(1) 61 win for the #5 seed.

The Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone, seeded number six in New York this year, showed she can still produce amazing tennis. Schiavone got to play her game yesterday against her Japanese opponent, Ayumi Morita. The Italian cruised with an easy 61 60 win over her opponent. Good start for Schiavone, can she follow up her Roland Garros run?

Home highest seeded and a big tennis name, seed #3 Venus Williams, managed her first round match against a tricky Italian Roberta Vinci. Williams won easily 64 61. Last year’s surprising semifinalist, home minion Melanie Oudin, showed a superb performance against Olga Savchuk, Ukraine qualifier. Oudin had to save several break points in the first set but since saving those two at 3-3, Oudin was on fire, hitting winners off both sides and Savchuk was absolutely outplayed and didn’t even win any more games. Oudin won 63 60 and this could be a good confidence booster for her and she could also feel less pressure after such a good match.

Another big name to watch, always, is Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, probably the only unseeded player who can be considered a contender for the title. After her foot injury in Cincinnati, three weeks ago, Ivanovic looks healthy and ready to continue her comeback form. The Serbian sensation played a great first round match against this year’s Eastbourne winner, Ekaterina Makarova of Russia. Ivanovic was controlling the match and could “AJDE” after beating the Russian easily 63 62. Another Russian, number twelfth seed Elena Dementieva, crushed Olga Govortsova 61 62 in the first round and confirms my prediction that she’s getting back into a great form. Belorussian Victoria Azarenka didn’t allow any upset although she lost the second set 57 to Romanian Monica Niculescu. Azarenka won the match 60 57 61.

Preview: US Open 2010!

Posted in Preview with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 30, 2010 by Ondrej

Draw

Finally here’s the last Grand Slam of the season, the US Open. Last chance for players to grab a “Big Four” title. US Open starts on Monday and will last next two weeks. Unfortunately, world number one Serena Williams won’t play this event, due to a foot injury. The winner of the US Open should be a participant at the Year-End Championships. Good Luck to all players!

1st section

After Serena Williams’ withdrawl, Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark will be the top seed and definitely one of the biggest favourites. Wozniacki won the US Open Series, with titles from Montreal and New Haven. Will she make it three in a row? Let’s look at her draw. The Dane should have no problems to get into the fourth round for sure. The biggest threat for Wozniacki in early rounds will be Russian Maria Sharapova, #14 seed, who won the US Open four years ago. If Wozniacki pass Sharapova, she could meet Li Na or Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals.

My pick for quarterfinals: Wozniacki def. Kuznetsova

2nd section

No doubts, Jelena Jankovic should advance into the quarterfinals from the top half of this section, the biggest threat should be Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium, who Jankovic could meet in the fourth round. I would go with Vera Zvonareva or Agnieszka Radwanska from the bottom half. After Zvonareva’s great run at Wimbledon, I think she will go through to the quarterfinals.

My pick for quarterfinals: Jankovic def. Zvonareva

3rd section

The Roland Garros 2010 winner, Francesca Schiavone of Italy, could be considered a favourite in the top half of this section but she hasn’t been playing well since her triumph so I will go easily with 10th seeded Victoria Azarenka in the top half. The only big hurdle for her could be Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, they could meet in the third round. The bottom half of this section should be dictated by elder Williams sister, Venus.

My pick for quarterfinals: V.Williams def. Azarenka

4th section

Elena Dementieva is getting into a very promising form, she’s recovering from injury, but she showed great tennis in New Haven last week. She should be able to go through the top half of this section, but it can be hard for her since she probably has to beat Hantuchova and Stosur. No doubts, the bottom half quarterfinalist of this section should be Kim Clijsters, the defending champion.

My pick for quarterfinals: Clijsters def. Dementieva

Semifinals

Wozniacki def. Jankovic

Clijsters def. V.Williams

Final

Clijsters def. Wozniacki

Yeah, I’m thinking of last year’s final repeat. I think it could be also Maria Sharapova instead of Wozniacki in the final, it’s really hard to predict but I have to go with more consistent Wozniacki. The preview would change a lot if Serena Williams would be able to play. I hope you liked the preview and I will do US Open reports from DAY 1 to the end.

New Haven: Third in a row for Wozniacki!

Posted in Uncategorized on August 29, 2010 by Ondrej

Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, world number two and last two years’ title holder in New Haven, makes it three title in a row and remains unbeaten after beating Russian Nadia Petrova 63 36 63 in the final at the Pilot Pen Tennis Premier tournament.

It was a high quality match, great final to watch, and after winning Montreal title on Monday, Wozniacki strikes again and makes it two titles in a row, no doubts she will be a hot favourite at the US Open which starts on Monday. Both girls were quite nervous at the beginning, first three games lasted around 20 minutes. but there was no break. Both players were really solid on serve in the first set and only one break decided a winner, Wozniacki took the first set 63. The Dane was break up early in the second set, Petrova was even forced to take a medical time-out at 0-2, as she felt a pain in her back and couldn’t even wait for a changeover. The Russian didn’t look injured though, so she was able to continue the match. Wozniacki’s serve wasn’t that effective anymore and there were couple of breaks after that medical time-out. Petrova managed to win the second set 63 and we went into a decider. Wozniacki was break up most of the time in the final set, but at 1-4, Petrova hit four aces in a row, which was a nice confidence booster for her and helped her to break her opponent in the next game. Unfortunately for neutral tennis fans, that was all what the Russian could do, Wozniacki broke Petrova again and served out the match without any problems. This is the third title in a row for Wozniacki in New Haven, she played there in 2008 for the first time and still remains unbeaten. As a top seed for the next tournament, the US Open, she will be a hot favourite for the title but she has a long way to go. If she wins the US Open, she will also become world number one.

You can expect US Open preview today or tomorrow before the competition kicks off at 11 AM New York time.

New Haven: Favourites into the final!

Draw

Saturday OOP

Friday at the Pilot Pen Tennis, Premier tournament held in New Haven, offered the semifinals matches. Day session  semifinal match featured a Russian encounter between Nadia Petrova and Maria Kirilenko. The lower-ranked one, Maria Kirilenko, started off very well, punished any of Petrova’s second serve in the first set, but I have to say, Petrova was off, she made a lot of wild unforced errors and only her big first serve helped her to win two games in the first set. Unfortunately, Maria Kirilenko had to take a medical time-out at the beginning of the second set, as she felt a pain in her back. And that moment affected Kirilenko’s play for the rest of the match. I’m not sure if she should have finished the match after lossing the second set 26 easily. Anyway, her injury didn’t look that serious and she said that she felt better after that medical time-out she took early in the second set. The younger Russian had no chance after though, Kirilenko made a lot of unforced errors and couldn’t move as well as she can. Petrova’s serve was working perfectly in the final set, Kirilenko stood no chance on return. Petrova advanced into the final after a 26 62 62 win over her compatriot.

The night session clash featured the top seed Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark and another Russian, Elena Dementieva. Dementieva started off very well, hitting the ball very hard off both sides. Wozniacki’s forehand was off most of the match. Especially, she couldn’t return many of Dementieva’s serves on forehand side. Dementieva took the first set easily 61. The second set was a breakfest. Six breaks overall, but the level of the match didn’t really drop. Wozniacki took the second set 63. The final set was a great tennis, the best in this match. Both girls were playing really well. Dementieva was break up until 54, when she was serving for the match. The Russian absolutely failed to close it out and gave a chance to Wozniacki to get back into the match. Wozniacki took it and had even 0-40 on Dementieva’s serve at 65 in the final set. But Dementieva showed her experience and saved all those match points with beautiful winners. The final set tie-break had to decide about the winner. Dementieva started off better, had a 3-0 lead, but the Dane came back and converted her fourth match point, first in the breaker, at 6-5. That means Wozniacki has been still unbeaten in New Haven since 2008, when she played there for the first time. We will see if she can win the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament for the third time in a row tomorrow.

Semifinals’ Results:

(1) Caroline Wozniacki def. (4/WC) Elena Dementieva 16 63 76(5)

(8/WC) Nadia Petrova def. Maria Kirilenko 26 62 62

New Haven: Semifinals’ line-up known!

Draw

Friday OOP

Quarterfinals matches kicked off on Thursday at the Pilot Pen Tennis tournament, held in New Haven. Unfortunately not all four quarterfinals matches were played due to a withdrawl of Flavia Pennetta, who was suppossed to play against top seed Caroline Wozniacki. The top seed is through to the semifinals without having to play then, she will definitely appreciate this after her title run in Montreal last week.

In another match, Maria Kirilenko beat Dinara Safina 63 63 in a Russian encounter. Kirilenko was solid on her first serve and her return worked pretty well too, along statistics. Another Russian Nadia Petrova is through to the semifinals after destroying seed number two Samantha Stosur of Australia 62 61, and will face her compatriot Maria Kirilenko. Stosur won only 7 points on return in this match and didn’t even hit an ace, only 5 double faults. The match lasted only 53 minutes.

Is it even surprising that another semifinalist is another Russian? Elena Dementieva faced French Marion Bartoli, seed #6, and managed to beat her French opponent in a three-setter which lasted 3 hours. It’s quite unbelievable because the score was 63 36 62 in Dementieva’s favour. The reason is that most of the games went to many deuces and some rallies were pretty long. Dementieva will face top seeded Caroline Wozniacki in the next round.

Quarterfinals’ Results:

(1) Caroline Wozniacki def. (7) Flavia Pennetta W/O

(4/WC) Elena Dementieva def. (6) Marion Bartoli 63 36 62

Maria Kirilenko def. (WC) Dinara Safina 63 63

(8/WC) Nadia Petrova def. (2/WC) Samantha Stosur 62 61

The Nike Primetime Knockout Tennis Event!

Posted in Articles with tags , , on August 26, 2010 by Ondrej

With one of the most serious grand-slams of the year around the corner, a little fun and games wouldn’t hurt anyone. The Nike Primetime knockout event gave the professionals enough leverage to enjoy themselves until the ‘real’ games begin.

The enthralling event took place on the 25th of August 2010 at the Pier 54, in Manhattan, New York.  World no. 1 Rafael Nadal along with the legendary John McEnroe made appearances at the event. The two were joined by Russia’s Maria Sharapova and the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer.

Israeli Model and Actress, Bar Rafaeli was also part of the event. She was accompanied by New York Giant, Justin Tuck, along with Russian tennis star, Victroia Azarenka. America’s hottie, Bradley Cooper and Sami Ahmad were also featured at the match.

Serena participated in the tournament in spite of the fact that she had recently undergone surgery on her right foot. The athlete cut her foot on glass at a restaurant, shortly after winning the 2010 Wimbledon title.

The sportswoman however, couldn’t have looked better. With her hair done up nicely, Serena wore a black Nike drop-shoulder top with black opaque tights. The stylish black Nike shoe on her left foot compensated for the cast on her right foot. As always, she was also wearing jewelry that went well with her look.

The beautiful Bar Rafaeli was paired up with Spainish stud, Rafael Nadal for mixed doubles. Both of the individuals sported all-black outfits. Rafa wore a black pair of shorts to go with his black, v-necked tee with hints of grey and green.

Bar wore a black sleeveless dress that went with a white pair of Nike trainers. The two looked good together on court according to the spectators. The crowd shared a laugh as Serena asked Rafa to show off his abs during the match.

Young at heart, Mr. McEnroe was making the goofiest possible expressions on court. Surprisingly enough, his outfit was the jazziest of all. The sportsman wore a light grey ‘graphic’ Nike tee to go with his grey shorts and black Nike cap.

Federer’s infamous partner from the New York Tennis league, Sami Ahmad, asked the professional for a hug.  Roger was all smiles while hugging the young man. The two also high-fived each other on various stages in the match.

Roger wore a navy-blue outfit. His collared tee with white lining was matched with his shorts of the same color. With a Nike swoosh on his sleeve and the ‘RF’ imprinted along his chest, Federer entertained the crowd with his antics.

Bradley  Cooper and Maria Sharapova seemed to have ‘hit it off’ as both of them were clearly seen having a great time playing on one team. The American hunk high-fived Sharapova in his white, red and black Nike tee that went with his black shorts and white trainers.

Maria looked like an absolute Barbie-doll in her deep purple dress. The dress featured a yellow swoosh along the top of it and was matched with white Nike trainers. The sportswoman giggled and threw her hands in the air while playing doubles with Cooper.

Tuck went with a very plain look. The New York Giant wore plain black Nike track pants with a white collared tee and a white pair of trainers. In contrast to which, Azarenka wore a grey mini-skirt with a light green sleeveless top to go with her trainers of the same color.

Nadal’s team was verily defeated by Azarenka’s team. Alongside which, team Sharapova beat team Federer. The celebrities were seen laughing and smiling together in the post-event presser. (http://blogs.bettor.com/)
